Light Micrograph of Part of a Bony Trabecula In Fetal Spongy Bone
Ground compact bone in transverse section. In this unstained, undecalcified preparation, bone has been dried and ground down with abrasives. This thick section reveals the architecture and mineral (inorganic) component of bone but does not preserve cells or organic matrix. Each of the several Haversian systems contains a central Haversian canal (HC). These canals, small spindle-shaped lacunae, and slender canaliculi appear black. Volkmann canals (VC) run obliquely within the mineralized matrix. 75×.
