Q: Under what circumstances must I purchase a license to use an illustration from the Netter Collection?

A: Whether you are re-using an illustration from the Netter Collection in a book, journal, magazine, PowerPoint presentation, brochure, or something else, you must obtain a license from Elsevier.

Q: What is the maximum number of Netter images I can use?

A: You may use up to 10 Netter illustrations per single "product." For a license to use more than 10 Netter illustrations in a single product, please contact us at [email protected]

Q: How much does it cost to obtain a license to use an illustration from the Netter Collection?

A:License fees are per image based on the distribution (number of copies) and use (book, CDROM, brochure, etc.) of the illustrations. Therefore, the fees vary by request. Please review our pricing and usage schedule.

Q: My company/organization is non-profit. Am I required to obtain a license?

A: Whether you are a non-profit or for-profit organization, you must obtain a license to reproduce illustrations from the Netter Collection.

Q: I’m not reselling the product in which the Netter illustration will appear. Am I required to obtain a license?

A: Materials containing illustrations from the Netter Collection that you provide free of charge still require a license.

Q: May I alter, make modifications to, or adapt illustrations in the Netter Collection?

A: A: It is permissible to crop illustrations and remove or suppress the labels or leader lines. But you are not permitted to make changes, modifications, or alterations to the artwork itself, including the Netter Signature. For example, you may not have an artist "draw in" a break in a bone, a tear in a muscle, or a medical device such as a surgical scalpel to depict a medical condition without express written permission from Elsevier

Q: If I obtain a license to use a Netter illustration, how long is the license good for?

A: Unless otherwise specified in the type of license noted in your Invoice, (e.g. "Web use – 1 year"), a license is granted for one time use only. When you buy a license to print or duplicate up to a certain number copies of an illustration within your product or project, that number includes reprints. If you wish to print more than the number you purchased a license to print, you would be required to purchase another license.

Q: May I use illustrations from the Netter Collection in a PowerPoint presentation?

A: Yes, as long as you first obtain a license from Elsevier.

Q: How should I cite or credit illustrations from the Netter Collection?

A: The following credit line must appear with any Netter illustration that you use: "Netter medical illustration used with permission of Elsevier. All rights reserved." For web-based credits please use the following HTML:
